Speculation began after a change in language on Canon UK's website, as reported by PetaPixel. The sensor was originally stated as "designed and manufactured by Canon," however this was modified to "developed by Canon" later. Canon enthusiasts frequently pore over the company's marketing and press releases for indications as to what's going on beneath the surface, and this minor shift prompted some to speculate that Canon could not be producing its own sensors after all.

As a result of the increased speculation, one industry expert said on his website that the R3's sensor will be manufactured by Sony. Canon "had to go to Sony" for its BSI sensor technology, according to the report, implying that creating such sensors on its own would be too expensive for Canon. The report said, "This means that the Canon EOS R3's photos are effectively Sony images."

Canon released a rare comment to PetaPixel, claiming: β€œThe sensor in the forthcoming EOS R3 camera is Canon designed and manufactured.”
